Founded by Pierre Laramée and Josée Lepage, commissaires is basically a store behaving like a gallery. Its merchandise changes completly on a regular basis and is organised around themes rather than common places.
Themes so far include Holland, Urgency, the Color of a shadow and Ressuscitate, Madame Chose, Brooklyn etc.
Commissaires plays somewhat of a pionner role in many aspects. Most of the products showcased were shown for the first time in Quebec, in Canada and sometimes even in North America.
For example, by commissionning Dutch designer Maarten Baas, Commissaires became the first and only shop to sell his pieces in Canada. It introduced the work of French cabinet 5.5 designers to America and presented their porcelain project for Bernardaud for the first time outside Europe.
